Small And Mixed Animal Veterinary Externship in beautiful Albuquerque, NM

We would like to extend an invitation to all Third and Fourth Year veterinary students to come experience clinical practice in a “real world” setting.

Come spend 2-4 weeks with us and put all that academic knowledge to the test, seeing how it all fits together.

Southwest Veterinary Medical Center is a 3-4 doctor small animal and exotics practice in beautiful Albuquerque, NM.

We are open 5 days a week, 8-5:30pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm – so you can get in lots of good clinical time and then have the evenings free to enjoy the city or study the day’s cases. There are anesthetic protocols (surgery and dental/oral care procedures) daily as well as medicine cases in the exam rooms.

Exotic pets comprise 15-20% of our caseload and vary between small mammals, birds and reptiles. If you don’t have an interest in these pets, that’s ok. You would not be required to see them.

Direct mentorship will be happily provided for both anesthesia and medicine cases. This will be with one of the doctors on staff, but also with our wonderful credentialed (RVT) and non- credentialed technicians.

As this is an independently-owned practice for over 20 years, we can also provide time for discussing ownership and the business side of veterinary practice if you desire. We are always up for supporting independent ownership!

Unfortunately housing is not provided but we can sure help provide guidance in finding a place to stay. No stipend is offered with this position.
